Leadership Roles

In what specific ways can an individual influence an organization through the quality of his or her management and leadership skills?

New leadership roles require new leadership skills. These skills can only be developed, in my
judgment, through a lifelong commitment. It is not enough for one or two individuals to
develop these skills. They must be distributed widely throughout the organization (Mintzberg, et al., pg. 63).

Effective management can be carried out by acquiring three important leadership skills, attitude management, procedure management and having the ability to set goals. Having a good attitude is imperative and infectious. A manager that keeps a good attitude will motivate the team, whereas, a manager with bad attitude will discourage the team. Procedure Management is important for a team in order to have a consistent way of approaching projects. Proper procedures can keep a team organized and efficient. Goal Setting is imperative for managers. Everyone on the team needs to know what the outcome of a project should look like. A manager that sets strong goals for their team and allows them to understand their role in the outcome can expect powerful results.

Cash Cow

A man returning home a day early from business trip got into a taxi at the airport.
It was after midnight.. While enroute to his home, he asked the cabby if he would be a witness. The man suspected his wife was having an affair and he intended to catch her in the act. For $100,the cabby agreed.

Quietly arriving at the house, the husband and cabby tiptoed into the bedroom. the husband switched on the lights, yanked the blanket back and there was his wife in bed with another man. The husband put a gun to the naked man's head.

The wife shouted,"Don't do it! This man has been very generous! I lied when I told you I inherited money. He paid for the Corvette I brought for you, He paid for our new cabin cruiser. He paid for our house at the lake. He paid for our country club membership, and he even pays the monthly dues."

Shaking his head from side to side the husband slowly lowered the gun. He looked over to the cab driver and said."What would you do?"

The cabby said, "I'd cover his ass up with the blanket before he catches a cold,"

What Gender Is A Computer

A SPANISH Teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.'House' for instance, is feminine: 'la Casa.''Pencil,' however, is masculine: 'el lapiz.'A student asked, 'What gender is 'computer'?'Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether computer' should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation. The men's group decided that 'computer' should definitely be of the feminine gender ('la computadora'), because:

1... No one but their creator understands their internal logic;
2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;
3. Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and
4. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.

The women's group, however, concluded that computers should be Masculine ('el computador'), because:
1. In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;
2. They have a lot of data but still can't think for themselves;
3. They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they ARE the problem; and
4. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model. The women won.

Idiots

6 truths in life!

1. You cannot touch all your teeth with your tongue...
2. All idiots, after reading the first truth, will try it..
3. And discover that The first truth is a lie.
4. You're smiling now because you're an idiot.
5. You soon will tell someone about this site...
6. There's still a stupid smile on your face.

I apologize about this. I'm an idiot and I needed company .......

Stop The War

The third anniversary of the U.S.-led war in Iraq drew protesters around the globe, from hurricane-ravaged Louisiana to Jamaica, with chants of “Stop the War” and calls for the withdrawal of troops.

Come To America

DIARY OF A JAMAICAN WHO JUST MOVED TO SOUTH DAKOTA , USA

October 8th
We have arrived in America !!! Finally!!! This marks a new chapter in our lives. It's very nice here. It's a little cool, but who needs HOT weather? This is perfect ... not too hot, not too cold.

October 15th
It is getting a little cooler, but we are adjusting. We bought some sweaters today and went for a short walk. Loving America !! !! This is what life's about.

October 30th The weather i s definitely cooler now. We taped all the windows shut, so cold air cannot creep in... Outside may be cold, but it feels like Jamaica in this house.

November 11th
The news reports say snow is on the way ... we cannot wait!!! We have never seen snow and it should be pretty exciting to see it for the first time.

November 14th
Started snowing. The first of the season and the first real snow we have ever seen. The wife cooked buttered buns and we sat by the window watching soft flakes drift down, clinging to the trees and covering the ground. Could never do anything like this in Jamaica . IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL SIGHT!!!

November 15th
We! woke t o a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a FANTASTIC sight! Every tree and shrub was covered like a beautiful white mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time and loved it. I did both our driveway and sidewalk. Later, the city snow plow came along and accidentally covered up our driveway with compacted snow from the street. The driver smiled and waved and I waved back and shoveled again. Americans are so friendly!

November 18th
It snowed an additional twelve inches last night and the temperature has dropped to around four degrees. The cold weather is not so bad ... we can take this, not at all as bad as we imagined. Several limbs on the trees and shrubs have snapped due to the weight of the snow. I shoveled our driveway again. Shortly afterwards the snow plow came by and did his trick again. Much of the snow is now brownish gray.

November 19th
Warmed up enough during the day to create some slush, which soon became ice again. Bought snow tires for both cars. I slipped and fell on my "batty" in the driveway, paid $130 for the chiropractor, but fortunately nothing was broken. More snow and ice expected.

November 20th
Still cold. Sold my wife's BMW and bought a 4x4 in order to get to work.

November 21st
On my way to work, the 4x4 skidded into the guardrail and did considerable damage to the right fender. We had another 15 inches of white shit last night. The vehicle is covered in salt and crud. More shoveling in store for me today. Di damn snowplow man do him job again. Watch me an' him!

November 22nd
Blouse and skirt ... the first heating bill just come! A how the hell it come to so much???

November 30th
A two frigging ! degrees out a door! And more rahtid snow de pon de way.> Not a tree or shrub ina di yawd whe no get damage. De power off most of the night. Wi try to keep from freezing to death wid candles and kerosene heater, but the heater tip over an' nearly bun dung the blasted house. Mi manage to put out the flames, but end up wid second degree burns pan mi hands, bun off mi yeyebrow and yeyelash dem. Den de car slide on the white shit (again!) on the way to the hospital and wi haffi write it off.

December 5th

Regulatory or Compliance Requirement

Select a regulatory or compliance requirement related to the employment relationship. It may involve workplace safety, wage and hours, retirement, or other regulated subject matter. What law governs that requirement? What obligations does that legal requirement create for the employer and employee? What can managers do to assure compliance with that regulatory requirement?

Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 prohibits private employers, state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions from discriminating against qualified individuals with disabilities in job application procedures, hiring, firing, advancement, compensation, job training, and other terms, conditions, and privileges of employment. The ADA covers employers with 15 or more employees, including state and local governments. It also applies to employment agencies and to labor organizations. The ADA's nondiscrimination standards also apply to federal sector employees under section 501 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended, and its implementing rules. An individual with a disability is a person who: Has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities; Has a record of such an impairment; or Is regarded as having such an impairment.

A qualified employee or applicant with a disability is an individual who, with or without reasonable accommodation, can perform the essential functions of the job in question. Reasonable accommodation may include, but is not limited to: Making existing facilities used by employees readily accessible to and usable by persons with disabilities. Job restructuring, modifying work schedules, reassignment to a vacant position; Acquiring or modifying equipment or devices, adjusting or modifying examinations, training materials, or policies, and providing qualified readers or interpreters.

An employer is required to make a reasonable accommodation to the known disability of a qualified applicant or employee if it would not impose an "undue hardship" on the operation of the employer's business. Undue hardship is defined as an action requiring significant difficulty or expense when considered in light of factors such as an employer's size, financial resources, and the nature and structure of its operation.
An employer is not required to lower quality or production standards to make an accommodation; nor is an employer obligated to provide personal use items such as glasses or hearing aids.

Mrs. Dahlia Bartley

Mrs. Bartley was a well beloved teacher at the world renowned Glenmuir High School, where she taught a variety of subjects, specifically English Language and English Literature. Known formally as English A and B. Mrs. Bartley was actively involved in school activities such as Choir, Quiz, Debate, Chess and pretty much anything that had to do with the school. She was more than a mother, coach, assistant coach, referee, physiotherapist, father to the Dacosta Cup Football team.

Whichever year it was. Mrs. Bartley assumed the role of Vice Principal, officially, because she had that title years before it was penned. She exercised her multi-faceted talent in bringing the school body to a well rounded group of world ready set of young people. She did prepare us for the world because indeed you need preparation and she did that beautifully. Mrs. Bartley will be missed by Mr. C. Radcliffe, current principal and the entire school body of teachers and students residing at 10 Glenmuir Rd., Clarendon. Also the P.T.A., P.S.A., the surrounding business community, the Caribbean Examination Council (C.X.C.) as she was actively involved in proceedings there, all students who have passed through the gates of Glenmuir High School and everyone who has came in contact with her.

Mrs. Bartley is currently married to Mr. Sydney Bartley and has one son, Stefan Bartley. Our best wishes are with you Mr. Bartley and Stefan. There is so much more to say about Mrs. Bartely but if you wish to know more, you will see the inexplicable expression of rivers of tears at the funeral. Family members, school teachers and friends can all tell you about Mrs. Bartley's great persona. Without doubt, she will be greatly missed. Star Teacher. Incredible Person.

Reverse Discrimination

The U.S. Supreme Court has just rendered a decision on the case involving the firemen in new Haven, Connecticut. It is a reverse discrimination lawsuit filed by firemen in New Haven, Connecticut. The name or style of the case is Ricci v. DeStafano. The decision was 5-4, which is interesting since the decision in the 2003 Bollinger University of Michigan cases had the same split, but with entirely different results. In the Ricci case, the U.S. Supreme Court was asked to determine if there was a continued need for special treatment for minorities, or if enough progress had been made to make existing laws obsolete, especially in a political atmosphere in which an African-American occupies the White House. This case is important on a variety of fronts.

First, why is the fact that an American, who happens to have mixed parentage, be mentioned in this case? What is the relevance?

Secondly, why is the media, etc., making an issue of the fact that the nominee for the US Supreme Court, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, ruled against the firemen? Does this case highlight the importance of party affiliation, politics, and the persons who sit as Justices of the highest court in America?

Thirdly, what happens to affirmative action programs? I look forward to your comments.

Litigation Risk

Reflect on the traditional litigation system (such as the lawsuit, answer, discovery, trial, and/or jury). What are the risks that businesses and other organizations encounter when dealing with traditional litigation, and what measures can business managers take to reduce exposure to those risks?

There are many risks associated for businesses and organizations when it comes to the traditional litigation system. Litigation can be expensive, there are strict procedures and timing that has to be followed, you never know who the judge or jury will be and there is judicial enforcement. A less expensive approach to litigation is ADR (Alternative Dispute Resolution) which offers parties alternative means to resolving their differences outside the actual courtroom. There are many different ranges of ADR and some are informal which could include a simple settlement to a more formal approach. You have Arbitration which is one of the oldest forms of ADR and is used commonly today.

There are many different ways that managers can reduce exposure to these types of risks. Personally I like to call them "common sense laws" but sometimes they are often found uncommon. Simple things like discrimination against race, creed, sex, origin and pay are important. Businesses should provide written documentation of their policies and procedures so that not only are employees aware so are the customers. When using the ADR method it gives you flexibility, you select the parties involved, it can sometimes be less expensive and it is usually done much faster than the courts.

The US Legal System

What is one way the U.S. legal system impacts U.S. businesses? How do specific aspects of the U.S. legal system contribute to furthering commerce? What would happen if that characteristic were not present in the legal system?

The legal system plays an important part in the development in which businesses operate. Laws determine obligations of employers to employees, as well as employees to employer. These laws also provide the same obligations to customers also. Laws help to protect contracts that drawn and created that affects suppliers, distributors and any other contracts that are between a business and another source provides services to the businesses or businesses providing services to others. The legal systems helps to provide protection in the financial aspects of the business, from shareholders to the taxes that must be paid as well as other major financial records that need to be addressed on a regular basis.

The legal systems help to further commerce by enacting laws that govern around the partied involved. Laws vary from one state to another, as well as from one country to another. This promotes further commerce through variances of the different laws which can benefit one business to another.

If there were no public courts the probable result would be a steadfast. Without a legal system the world would not have a common ground and things would just be a total mess and people would form ethical decisions. Laws help to teach the rights and wrongs even we do not always agree with them. Laws also help the people have a fighting chance in the democracy that is present at every corner we turn or face.
